Hi SSL alumni,
It's been about a month since our fabulous workshop, and I was
wondering if anyone would like to share any successes or stumbles with
the group so that we might be able to support each other.
For me, my greatest stumble seems to be finding enough time. I am
trying to encourage service-learning at our Upper School through two
main avenues: 1) creating/encouraging opportunities for students & 2)
raising awareness of the "how tos" among faculty. I think I'm doing
better with #1, but am also putting together a workshop for our
faculty to make progress on #2. I think part of what I need to do
here is reassure faculty that some of them are already doing service
learning as a part of their curriculum, but don't recognize it as
such.
Best wishes for the holiday season.

Hi SSL alumni,
I have been doing more planning then actions. I am wanting
to get a few teachers working with me on creating a book written by
students about our community - yet to be defined. As an art teacher,
I am thinking of having students select landmarks in our community to
use in a printmaking assignment coming up. These could be additions
to the book possibly.
I have two students that want to get involved in educating other teens
about safe driving. They are planning an activity at our school to
raise awareness. I have not linked it to literacy yet. Any ideas how
I can?
Oh yes, and the international bookmark program. My 8th graders are
making a bookmark illustrated with a picture and a quote from their
favorite book. We will send these to a bookmark exchange and we will
get a class set of bookmarks from another group of students somewhere
in the world. If anyone wants the contact for this exchange, let me
know. Aloha, Carole

Question: I was not able to attend the "Strategies for Success With Literacy" workshop. Can someone who attended tell me if the strategies presented would work with a variety of subjects and age groups?

While the workshop focused a lot on literacy, teachers in all areas from biology, health, social studies, art and science found connections to their curriculum. I would say it is an excellent resource for all curriculuar areas.
